The Photo Album $15.98 2000’s We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes delivered on the promise of You Can Play These Songs with Chords and Something About Airplanes. For once, a band’s popularity grew commensurate with its maturation. Despite the heightened attention, singer/songwriter/guitarist Ben Gibbard next let loose Death Cab for Cutie’s finest moment, “Photobooth,” the lead track on the sparkling Forbidden Love EP. New fans worldwide swooned under its beguiling romantic rise ‘n’ fall and its lingering, bittersweet, wallet-sized artifact. And though it wouldn’t have killed them to include “Photobooth” here — for its spotless greatness and thematic likeness — The Photo Album’s ten tracks are of the EP’s heightened caliber. Gibbard’s words screen intriguing mini-films of the mind, stoked by corresponding daydreamy music. An exquisite liaison of the British penchant for ringing, knelling, subconscious guitars, and direct/grittier American drive, the band is tight, evocative, and inventive. Bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Michael Schorr lock in creative rhythmic bases, while Gibbard and Chris Walla’s guitar work give the band climactic, cinematic coloring shades. And, in the end, it’s Gibbard’s remarkable abilities as a writer and singer that are on display most. Each word draws you in via his sweet-guy thoughtful voice. The solo 1:47 opener “Steadier Footing” is merely a starter course, but it feels like an entrée: “And this is the chance I never got/To make a move, but we just talk” is only one measure of the chances/plans/dreams/connections and relationships that have eluded him or fizzled. Reeled in, one is left to look back over one’s own smoldering wreckage, of opportunities or attachments lost — much as “Movie Script Ending”s abrupt turn, “Passing through unconscious states/When I awoke I was on the highway,” somehow segues into the couplet, “With your hands on my shoulders/A meaningless movement, a movie script ending.” Like “Photobooth,” it’s a typically sobering, adverse assessment of how unromantic the romanticized can become. That it’s a great pop song, arresting in its jerky wobble, is just another point in its, and this LP’s, favor. Photo-Finish $15.99 Remixed and expanded (with two additional tracks recorded but chopped off the vinyl version) for its debut on CD in 1999, this is a sturdy, workmanlike Rory Gallagher release. Reverting back to a trio, Gallagher toughens up his sound and blazes through some robust blues rockers like “Last of the Independents,” “Shadow Play,” and “Brute Force & Ignorance” (one of his best hard rock riffs) with nervy energy. Gallagher’s swampy side emerges on “Cloak & Dagger,” another song that explores his fascination with B-movie gumshoes, a common theme for the Irish blues-rocker. His guitar work is typically excellent throughout, especially on “Overnight Bag,” as he overdubs himself on acoustic. Still, the album has a samey feel due to some of the songwriting not being quite up to snuff, and a few tracks, like the moody, slow-burning “Feel to the Fire,” stretched well past its breaking point to over six minutes. Of the two additional tunes, “Early Warning” is a typically rugged chunky rocker, and “Juke Box Annie” explores the guitarist’s jaunty, slightly funky country style. Neither is essential, but both will be important finds for the Gallagher collector. Brother Donal’s liner and track notes are short yet informative, and the sound is an enormous improvement over the original version. There is a remarkable clarity and fullness to the bass, along with a definition that exposes heretofore unheard instruments like the mandolin on “Brute Force…” and hand claps on “Cruise On Out,” both previously buried in the mix. Music & Dance $19.98 Min Tanaka is a dancer, and although one can hear the sporadic shuffling or stomping of feet or the slapping of hands against a wall, one gets the impression that Derek Bailey is being more directly influenced by the dance movements themselves and adjusting his improvisations accordingly. A photo inside the disc package shows Bailey walking and playing around Tanaka who, in this instance, is huddled nude, pressing himself into a wall. The ambience of the recording site, a glass-ceilinged, abandoned forge in Paris, plays the other significant role here. Several minutes into the first track, a heavy rainstorm erupts, creating a low roar that briefly threatens to overwhelm the music. Bailey, with his classic English ability to take things in stride, simply uses the sound as material to work with and accompanies the downpour with aplomb. When the leaking roof causes a small fusillade of water drops, these too are incorporated into the fabric of the piece, and quite beautifully. In fact, on occasion Bailey sits out entirely, allowing the rain splatters, the dancer’s movements and the passing car engine to fully inhabit the sound space. As is the case with many of his releases, Bailey consistently amazes the listener both with his extraordinary ability to coax sounds from his guitar that may have never before been heard or imagined and, more importantly, his unerring sense of exactly when to utilize those sounds. While Bailey remains maligned in so-called traditional circles, it’s clear that he’s admired by one of the musicians most deeply involved with the entire tradition of the guitar. ~ Brian Olewnick, All Music Guide

Black and White Photo Enterprise $7.98 Radio Vago does an impressive job of invoking the post-punk and new wave sounds of the early ’80s without sounding too much like a copycat retro band. With their mesmerizing keyboards and distinctive guitar noise, the band’s dark, arty brand of synth pop suggests a range of possible influences including Joy Division and Bauhaus. Vocalist Andrienne Pearson finds the right balance between Gothic diffidence and theatrical shrillness, while the somewhat abstract lyrics tend toward moody phrases such as “scratching noises in the wall and underground” and “feel your body burn in fire.” Black and White Photo Emporium is a relatively short EP, barely lasting over 14 minutes, but it’s a fine effort that shows a lot of promise for the band. ~ Todd Kristel, All Music GuidePerformers: Nicole Fiorentino – Bass

Moroccan Street Music $19.98 Collectors of Moroccan music may be tricked into thinking this is a recording made in the streets of a town such as Fez. They may listen to the songs and wonder where all the background noise is. Actually, these are studio recordings of three musicians who, in the course of their careers, played frequently at outdoor events such as public markets. The musicians sing and perform on oud, the 11-string fretless instrument most closely associated with Moroccan music. Four different types of drums provide rhythmic counterpoint. The songs are of the variety that probably go into extended versions at a live performance, and are given a reasonable amount of space over two album sides. Documentation standards are a bit down for this label; for example, although the musicians’ names are listed with short biographies, there is no information about who plays what instruments, and one would have to read the label to find out what instruments are featured on each song. Packed to the limits with sepia portraits, full color explosive live shots, and countless fly-on-the-wall surprises, this is Metallica, raw and uncut. Stretching back to the days of their garage demos, through the initial tours and albums with the unique Cliff Burton and the phenomenal success of the Black album, right up to the Load tour, this is Metallica as seen by a true legend of rock imagery.

A Man and His Music $29.98 There are plenty of jazz fans who can’t stand the lush and lazy sentimentality of arranger Claus Ogerman. They think he’s ruined it for every artist he’s worked with — Frank Sinatra and Diana Krall to name two — but they always seem to ignore that he was an integral part of at least one accepted classic, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Wave. He’s also been responsible for a lot of cheese — this or that orchestra plays the “hits of Italy” type albums — and his work for Andre Kostelanetz doesn’t put him in a class with respected arrangers like Ellington or George Russell, and it isn’t worth hearing anyway. That’s why the well-picked American edition of Man and His Music beats the four-disc Man Behind the Music, released by the German Verve imprint Boutique (it also steals the too-big box’s liner notes, which are insightful and mostly from the man himself). On the German release, you had to suffer a horribly suave cover photo of Claus with a ’70s suit and European cigarette — held by the tippy-tip, of course — but you also had to suffer too much Streisand, Michael Franks, and Ogerman’s own Gate of Dreams album. Since this is a Verve-proper release, there are plenty of Verve’s artists represented, which is fine, since it’s with this label that Ogerman did his best work. Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, and Wes Montgomery all succumb willingly to Ogerman’s sentimental aesthetic, one that’s not really syrupy but is entirely formulaic. That’s why it’s up to the revolving door of guests to keep things interesting, and why three Michael Brecker tracks are one too many (especially when they could have included the great Getz/Ogerman version of “Moonlight in Vermont”). A taste of Freddie Hubbard’s overly dated recordings with the arranger are, at the very least, time capsule interesting and Diana Krall’s “I Should Care” is a superb closer. The Krall/Ogerman album Look of Love got whacked by the critics, but after a two-disc history lesson in the world of Ogerman, it’s possible to guess why the chanteuse turned to the arranger. Ogerman makes fantastic mood albums, ones for rainy, sad days that are both wistful and warm. If you can relate a bittersweet breakup in Krall’s life to the recording date of her Ogerman album, there you go.
