San Fran
I want to drive from LA to San Fran but want to avoid city-driving. Where am I best to pick up / drop-off car?
I have only ever driven on the left-hand side before and would feel nervous driving on the right-hand side. I will be fine to drive on freeways but would not want to drive through central LA or San Francisco. Would I be best to pick up a car at LA airport? Would I be able to get straight onto the freeway from there? Similarly, would I be best to drop the car off at San Francisco airport and then get a shuttle into central San Fran?
My boyfriend is from the UK and came to visit me in England. He had to do all the driving since I’m not old enough to rent a car… city driving scared him a bit, but he picked it up quickly.
For San Francisco, what I usually do to avoid insane parking rates is take my car to one of the BART stations (trains) and park it there for free, then take the train into the city. Daly City is a good spot, but I’ve used San Leandro a few times too. The stations are usually right next to the freeways.
SFO is actually a fair distance from SF, so be prepared for that.
You can get onto the freeway right from LAX, but be warned- those freeways can be just as hectic as city driving. Most people use Highway 5 to get from SF to LA, but it’s a long, boring drive with little to see. Make sure you take Highway 1 for at least some of it for the amazing coastal views.
