Are Alright

Vikes hangover (and a candy-coating of snow)
I doubt I’m the only one drained, mentally-exhausted, hoarse from screaming at my TV set Sunday evening. I love football, but after the 5th (Vikings) turnover I was purple alright, apoplectic with crazy-rage, pacing like an expectant father. By Paul Douglas

Tonight Alright $7.94 Spiderbait is one of Australian music’s most loved, best selling, & hardest-rocking three pieces. “Tonight Alright” is their fifth album, & their first release in the United States. It is a “cracking 12-track set of killer riffs & machine gun deadly rhythms, underscored with the band’s razor sharp wit.” Spiderbait’s plan with “Tonight Alright” was deceptively simple: get back to rockin’ basics & record what Kram (drummer/vocals) likes to call “as close to the band playing live without making a live record.” |

The Complete: It’s Alright $13.59 A very competent group with mod, Merseybeat, and R&B leanings, the Rockin’ Vickers never came close to carving a sound of their own. Combined with their lack of original material, that condemned them to trivia-question status in the very competitive days of the British Invasion. Complete: Its Alright! has both sides of all four of their 1964-1966 singles, plus six previously unreleased tracks; the crazed primitive guitar solo on “I Go Ape” is the undoubted highlight. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |
|

Alright Guy $7.94 Gary Allan’s fourth album honors traditional honky tonk and American music without dripping into the sentimentality that bogs down so many of his contemporaries. The singing is better here than on anything he’s ever done, and the song selection — ranging from a Todd Snider cover to a nice Bruce Robison-penned closer called “What Would Willie Do” — is sharp and smart. Alright Guy presents a look at country music that bucks tradition while keeping the faith. ~ Michael Gallucci, Rovi |

It’s Alright with Me $13.59 In 1979, two years after Labelle’s breakup, the trio’s fans were hoping that Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash would someday get back together. But it was not to be; all three of them were pursuing solo careers, although Patti LaBelle was the only one who became a major superstar as a solo artist. Produced by Skip Scarborough in 1979, It’s Alright With Me was Patti LaBelle’s third solo album. This vinyl LP came at a time when disco was huge, but LaBelle doesn’t provide a lot of dance grooves here. Though It’s Alright With Me contains a few up-tempo selections (including “Deliver the Funk” and the exuberant “Music Is My Way of Life”), romantic ballads and slow jams are dominant. Overall, the material is pleasant but not remarkable; this is true of the up-tempo items as well as ballads like “Come What May,” “My Best Was Good Enough,” and “Love and Learn.” This isn’t a bad record, although it isn’t one of LaBelle’s essential albums either. Not recommended to casual listeners, It’s Alright With Me is strictly for the singer’s more devoted fans. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Miguel Fuentes – Glockenspiel, Triangle, Xylophone, Marimba, Percussion; Dianne Wright – Vocals (Background); Emma Coleman – Vocals (Background); Ernest Straughter – Fender Rhodes; Julia Waters – Vocals (Background); Luther Waters – Vocals (Background); Maxine Waters – Vocals (Background); Michael Stanton – Clavinet, Fender Rhodes; |

Alright Again! $13.58 One of the most satisfying contemporary Brown discs of all for the discerning blues fan. Nothing but swinging, horn-abetted blues adorn this album, as Gate pays tribute to an influence and a protege by covering T-Bone Walker’s “Strollin’ with Bones” and Albert Collins’s “Frosty.” Brown’s jauntily revives Junior Parker’s “I Feel Alright Again” and Percy Mayfield’s “Give Me Time to Explain,” while his own numbers — a funky “Dollar Got the Blues,” the luxurious blues “Sometimes I Slip” — are truly brilliant. ~ Bill Dahl, Rovi Performers: Alvin “Red” Tyler – Horn (Alto), Sax (Tenor); Jim McMillen – Horn (Alto), Trombone; Joe Sunseri – Horn (Alto), Sax (Baritone); Stanton Davis, Jr. – Horn (Alto), Trumpet; Bill “Foots” Samuel – Horn (Alto), Flute (Alto), Sax (Tenor), Sax (Soprano), Sax (Alto); David Fender – Organ (Hammond), Piano; Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown – Vocals, Violin, Guitar; Lawrence Sieberth – Piano; Lloyd Herrman – Drums; Myron Dove – Bass; Red Lane – Bass |

Everything’s Alright: The Complete Recordings $13.59 There have been a couple of other good Mojos compilations that have gathered most of this Merseybeat group’s work, focusing wholly on their mid-’60s Decca output. Since their Decca recordings comprise almost everything they released, there’s not room for much more on a Mojos anthology. But Everything’s Alright: The Complete Recordings does manage to beat out previous Mojos collections by a nose, for it includes not only all 17 of the tracks they issued on Decca between 1963-1967, but also the one they did for the 1963 This Is Merseybeat, Vol. 2 compilation when they were still calling themselves the Nomads, as well as their obscure 1968 single for Liberty. These additions aren’t exactly crucial: the Nomads cut, “My Whole Life Through,” is basic to the point of rudimentary Merseybeat, while the 1968 single shows them moving into somewhat more modern late-’60s pop/rock with unmemorable results. Still, with these additions and good historical liner notes, it stands as the absolutely definitive compilation of the Mojos’ work. The 1963-1966 Decca sides comprising the bulk of the disc will remain what they’re most known for, however, including some decent if somewhat second-rank Merseybeat (highlighted by the hit “Everything’s Alright”), the game attempt at pop-folk on their 1964 single “Seven Daffodils,” and some poppier 1965 singles that show them moving in something of a Righteous Brothers direction. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

Kids Are Alright-the Who (Se) $25.46 A dazzling visual diary of legendary performances, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT chronicles the development of the Who from angry young mod upstarts to worldwide arena rock icons. Director Jeff Stein (who was just 21 at the time) was given unlimited access to archives of the Who, occasionally butting heads with famously strong-willed guitarist/songwriter Pete Townsend over the direction of the film. It begins with the band’s famed guitar-smashing, 1967 American TV debut on The Smothers Brothers show and continues through Monterey Pop, Woodstock, and on into the 1970s as the band cements its legend status in the rock canon with such complex works as QUADROPHENIA. Twenty-two classic Who tunes are featured, including a special version of the title track, My Generation, Magic Bus, Happy Jack, and Long Live Rock. Manic drummer Keith Moon, who provides numerous laughs in the film, died a year before the film was released. |

It’s Alright, It’s OK, Satellite Commander $22.38 2010 debut album from the Australian band, fast gaining a reputation as one of the country’s must see live bands. Alright You Restless $11.98 Reacting to what he saw as apathy in the Portland music scene, former Pseudosix frontman Tim Perry returns at the helm of his latest project, AgesandAges. Armed with dense, tent revival vocal harmonies and bright country-inflected pop arrangements, the band feels at times like a pastoral version of the Polyphonic Spree, capturing a sense of exuberance and earnestness that has the potential to disarm even the most cynical listeners. This unabashed approach to songwriting makes Alright You Restless a refreshing departure from the waves of murky, detached pop that came in vogue with the rise of chillwave, offering listeners a brighter, more joyous alternative to lead them out of the musical fog. A lot of the credit for this light, effulgent sound goes to AgesandAges’ huge seven-member lineup. Despite having so many cooks in the kitchen, the arrangements sound crisp and spontaneous, giving the album a real “in the moment” feeling that might’ve been lost had Perry decided to make this a bedroom recording project rather than a full-band affair. As it stands, the band is able to negotiate its way to a sound that’s dense without ever becoming completely impenetrable, allowing all of the elements to shine through on songs like “So So Freely” and “Tap on Your Windowpane.” In a way, Alright You Restless is an exercise in balance, maintaining enough ebullience to be engaging and uplifting without feeling theatrical or manic. This is a line that AgesandAges walk artfully, making their debut album one that’ll leave fans hungry for a follow-up. ~ Gregory Heaney, Rovi |

The CD reissue has two previously unreleased bonus tracks: a vocal/piano version of “Beautiful Boys” and a version of “You’re the One” from the Milk and Honey sessions. ~ James Chrispell, Rovi Performers: Badal Roy – Tabla; Bobby Alessi – Vocals (Background); Howard Johnson – Horn, Tuba, Sax (Baritone); Peter Thom – Vocals (Background); Yoko Ono – Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals, Piano, Vocals; Allan Schwartzberg – Drums; Allen Schwarzberg – Drums; Andy Newmark – Drums; Arthur Jenkins – Percussion; Carlos Alomar – Vocals (Background), Vocals; David Friedman – Vocals (Background), Percussion; Earl Slick – Guitar; Ed Walsh – Synthesizer; Elliott Randall – Guitar; George Small – Piano; Gordon Grody – Vocals (Background), Vocals; Hugh McCracken – Guitar; Jimmy Maelen – Percussion; John Lennon – Guitar; John Tropea – Guitar; Kurt Yahjian – Vocals (Background), Vocals; Michael Holmes |

The Who: The Kids Are Alright [Deluxe Edition] $19.51 A dazzling visual diary of legendary performances, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT chronicles the development of the Who from angry young mod upstarts to worldwide arena rock icons. |
